found an interesting archive and digital library called ibiblio.org. It includes various online journals and e-books of diverse topics. This is a really big project and the scale is quiet large as well.
In contrast my idea should work in a more visual way and rely less on text. This should make it more interesting for students to use it and also increase usability. I still did not find any projects that did the exact same thing. Most of the time interface design for libraries is linked to digital libraries…

just found an interesting resource concerning the animation and 3D effect while turning pages of a book:

L. Hong, S.Card, JD CHENG. Turning Pages of 3D Electronic Books. Palo Alto Research Center, 2006.

it states how a realistic turning page can be achieved and what difficulties there are with creating an animation of this kind. For example it states that a turning page could be achieved with a simple cloth modifier but this is not the most realistic way.

interface design for griffith library

I did some further research and the idea that I have is not really a digital library. I do not want to digitalize any actual books but just create a new system of accessing meta information.
The idea so far includes a section for various deparments that links then to page with books that visually displayed. each book is al link that leads to the books page, through opening up the book meta information will be displayed. the navigation through this meta information could be bookmarks in the book. To make the user experience richer animation could be used to turn the pages within the book…

Found an interesting paper on interface design for digital libraries: digitallibrary_interfeacedesign
Here is an abstract of the paper: “Today’s digital libraries are extreme complex information systems, which run on the Internet. The facilities of digital libraries are increasing daily as the technology advances with a motive to provide the appropriate information to its users. The very purpose of the digital libraries is to provide the required information to its users in a convenient and fashioned manner. Since the digital libraries are running on the Internet and the users are from different psychological, educational and social backgrounds, the usage of digital libraries is varying from user to user which entail the need of best user interface. Hence, this paper proposes some design principles for user interfaces for digital libraries for its effective implementation.”

Main design principles are simple, support, familiar, informative, efficient and accurate. It should be easy to access information and search or store them. In addition the possibility for further plug-ins is a big issue when it comes to building and running a digital library.

For my idea those principles will be relevant. It is obvious that if students should use the interface to search for books it has to be efficient and easy to use. The usability is one of the major factors when it comes to digital libraries and to be honest right now I do not see any of that at the interface of the library at Griffith. I would really like to improve the current system and update the interface. In addition books that are not in the library but would be interesting to students could be listed and linked to their amazon page.

first idea

I am interested in interaction design. I would like to create an interactive interface for the library which would be divided by faculties and include the most popular books. Their could also be a feature about recommended reads by lecturer and links to amazon if books are not available at the library. Another good feature would be to include reviews from other students. In general this should help students to find interesting and relevant books and engage more with the library.
